American history and civics education in the
United States is facing a worrying decline.
According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), known as the "Nations Report Card", in 2022, only 20% of eighth-graders were proficient in civics, and a mere 13% reached proficiency in U.S. history. A 2019 survey by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation found that only 36% of American adults could pass a multiple-choice test on basic American history.
